The Level 5 HND in Business (Law) is suitable for people currently or hoping to work in business and management roles with a particular interest in the legal elements. This course gives you the opportunity to complete specialist studies which are directly relevant to job roles. You will learn about a range of subjects, including the English Legal System, Small Business Enterprise and Company Law. In the second year, you will complete a project developed using your own individual expertise and the skills you have gained during the course. It encourages the development of the skills required to evaluate and interpret the principles and concepts that underpin business law within a broad range of contexts. Specialist Business Law modules provide a focused and in-depth exploration of contemporary ideas and practice.

This course provides students with the opportunity to become well versed in the necessary disciplines required to pursue careers in the legal and business professions, with a full complement of required and optional modules to study. Newly written to take advantage of the latest developments in the business world, students will finish the course with a respected qualification, a very detailed understanding of the inner workings of modern business and a wide range of units completed – ensuring that they have a diverse learning experience. This a key skill required by graduate recruiters and students will develop the required knowledge and skills through authentic learning experiences in a workshop setting. Students will be supported to develop key business skills in relation to understanding the nature of business regulation and legal risk, problem-solving, networking, meeting skills, oral and written communication skills.

Assessment is based on assignments, typically one assignment per unit. These assignments will vary and include a mix of formal reports, presentations and practical tasks, but there will be no formal exams. You won’t have to write any exams during your HND; instead you will focus on gaining practical, applicable skills through real-world case studies and group and individual assignments. Learners are assessed using a variety of methods, including group work, tutorials, lectures, seminars presentations, role play and case study analyses, written assignments. All units will be individually graded as ‘passes, ‘merit’ or ‘distinction’. To achieve a full qualification you must pass all 8 units to achieve the higher certificate and all 16 units to achieve the higher diploma.
A key progression path for HND learners is to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the Higher National units to the degree programme in question. Learners studying the Level 5 HND will be able to progress to a Top-Up degree in business or law. The qualification also prepares learners for employment in the business sector. Some learners may wish to use this qualification in order to enter a specialist area of employment in the sector, where learners may work towards professional membership or study for professional body examinations.
This pathway considers the English legal system, legislation specifically relating to Business, anti-competitive practices and their impact on business, further common law principles and the impact of European Union legislation. Successful completion of the course can lead to legal careers in the public and private sectors.
- Minimum Age: 18 years old;
- Applicants are required to submit proof of prior certificated learning (e.g. Secondary School Diploma/Baccalaureate/Level 3 qualification) or relevant work experience;
- Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language.
- An interview with the college is compulsory prior student registration.

Government Founds – Student Finance England
If you are an UK/EU citizen or living in the UK on Indefinite stay, you can receive support from the government via Student Loan Company to cover tuition fees and some living costs while studying, depending on your circumstances. Tuition fee loans, to cover the full cost of your course, are paid directly to the course provider. Maintenance loans can be applied for at the same time, lending you money at the start of each term. You won’t have to pay back the loan until after your course, when you’re earning above a certain level. Students can still apply for grants if they’re eligible for certain benefits, disabled, or need help with childcare costs.
